Double Down

Press Release: It's Coming! KFC’s Double Down Hits NZ

Kiwis will at last have the chance to try KFC’s legendary Double Down burger when it lands in KFC restaurants around the country tomorrow.

The first-ever bun-less burger smashed sales records when it debuted in the USA and Canada. The most successful sandwich in KFC history, more than 10 million Double Downs were sold in the U.S. in the first month alone and it became Canada’s best selling new menu item after 360,000 burgers were sold in the first 10 days.

The first of its kind in New Zealand, the Double Down features the great taste KFC is known for - but without the bun.

With two of everything, the Double Down boasts two delicious fresh Original Recipe chicken fillets seasoned with KFC’s 11 secret herbs and spices, two slices of bacon and two slices of cheese (one standard, one cracked pepper), all topped off with the Colonel's special sauce.

Available for a limited time from Tuesday 10 May, the Double Down is the most anticipated burger ever to hit New Zealand, causing a media and talkback frenzy here when it launched in Australia in March.

KFC General Manager Brent Kitto says Kiwis have been calling for KFC to bring the Double Down to New Zealand ever since it launched in the U.S and Canada.

A Facebook petition created by some particularly passionate fans currently has more than 2,236 members, with 1330 followers also on Twitter.

“Double Down breaks the mould. With two of everything, there’s simply no room for the bun, just the best stuff – chicken, bacon, cheese and the Colonel’s special sauce,” says Kitto.

"We know the Double Down is not for everyone. It’s an occasional meal that Kiwis have a hunger for, and is only available for a limited time.

“Contrary to all the attention and speculation though, the Double Down is actually lower in calories and fat than a number of other burgers already on the market.”

With more protein than other burgers on the market, Kitto says the Double Down will appeal to those who need something to satisfy a hunger that a regular burger cannot fill.

The legions of Kiwis keen to ‘Take Down the Double Down’ will get their opportunity when it goes on sale at 10am Tuesday 10 May at KFC’s 93 stores nationwide.

"Double Down is finally here," declares Kitto. "Tell us what you think by joining the KFC Facebook page and getting involved in the most anticipated burger launch ever.”

Don’t miss your chance to take down the Double Down, available for five weeks only at a cost of $7.90 for the burger and $10.90 for a combo.
