KFC in New Zealand

Since New Zealand’s first KFC restaurant opened in Auckland in 1971 serving the Colonel’s Original Recipe® chicken, the brand has stayed on top by always delivering new taste experiences that keep our customers coming back.

When the first KFC opened at Auckland’s Royal Oak, Colonel Harland Sanders was 81 years old. The Colonel’s secret blend of eleven herbs and spices propelled the popularity of KFC as it expanded steadily. New Zealanders could now enjoy the same good-value fried chicken that Americans had enjoyed since the first dedicated KFC store opened in Salt Lake City in 1952.

Fried chicken is still our most popular dish, but love keeping things fresh. We’re always introducing new and tempting products that meet our three golden rules – quality, taste and convenience.

We introduced our first chicken burger in 1989. Since then Kiwis have grown to love the Chicken Fillet Burger, not to mention the Works Burger, Zinger Burger, and Burger Tower.

In 1992 we introduced the hugely successful KFC meals – made up of Original Recipe® chicken with selected side dishes, all at great value prices. Families poured into KFC for the ‘Party Pack’ and the ‘Super Family Feast’. Hungry young adults devoured the ‘Quarter Pack’ and the ‘Chicken Fillet Burger’. Children loved the ‘Buckethead’.

Each week KFC sells around 120,000 burgers and 116 tonnes of chicken. And other new taste experiences are always under development as chicken continues to grow in worldwide popularity because of its nutritional qualities.

The winning formula at KFC isn’t just about adding new products to menus and hoping customers will love them. At KFC we test and test and test again before we add a new item to our extensive menu. Only when an idea meets the ultimate seal of approval – that is, our test customers want more – will we introduce it slowly in selected areas. If that test meets with success – then we launch it throughout New Zealand. It’s the relentless attention to new products and delivering them to customers when and where they want them that has made KFC such a central part of New Zealand’s dining landscape.

There’s always something new at KFC – and it’s not just our menu. Our stores are currently getting a facelift. We listened to our customers and we’ve created a great new place to enjoy New Zealand’s most exciting chicken. And customers from around the world will soon be seeing a bit of New Zealand offshore as well. The New Zealand store design has been accepted as a new world wide standard for KFC – what a compliment!
